Attila

Verdi

With its dramatic anticipations of Macbeth, the musical anticipations of Rigoletto and the compression which (on record if not on the stage) becomes a positive merit — all these qualities, helped by a fine performance under Gardelli, make this [Philips] version of Attila an intensely enjoyable set. Deutekom, not the most sweet-toned of sopranos, has never sung better on record, and the rest of the cast is outstandingly good. The 1973 recording is well balanced and atmospheric. The Penguin Guide
